Help us build the Sanctuary!

Education

Here at the Sled Dog Sanctuary we love to not only spread
the word about foster dogs in need of adoption but we also love to teach people from all walks of life, and all over the globe, the joys and
excitement about our sport...

Kantishna Road House

Deep in the heart of Denali National
Park there exists a beautiful lodge made of mighty spruce poles with quiet cabins all around ready to welcome countless guests all summer long.

A
small dog yard is set up at the edge of
the property where six eager sled dogs wait to give their running demonstration
each day to these excited visitors.

Since 2008 the group of fosters entering the park has changed from year to year
as our Sanctuary dogs come in and out for adoption but the one constant message they send is that they, and many others like them, are eager and ready to run their way into your heart and home.

During the summer the Kantishna dog handler explains a bit about our sport, how our dogs have come to visit for the summer and how much they love to run. After the introduction the musher hooks up the dogs to the front of his four wheeler and off they go, pulling their best and parading around the property of the lodge.

Those still residing at their cabins find themselves drawn out for a quick treat of sled dogs passing by their doorstep. With a quick glance and full of boundless joy our powerful dogs cruse by loving to do this light work all summer long.

On the guests arrival home many will have photos and stories to share. For those looking to find a furry companion perhaps they give the shelter dogs in their area a second thought as they remember how these gentle beings touched their lives during their stay at the Kantishna Lodge, deep in heart of Denali Park.

Yukon Quest

Sled dog enthusiasts are familiar with the great sled dog race of the Iditarod but many are surprised that they have not heard of the Yukon Quest, an equally challenging race spanning half of Alaska and on into the Canada's Yukon Territory.

Since the Yukon Quest travels across state lines there are two headquarters, one in Fairbanks Alaska and one in Whitehorse Canada. In the summer of 2010 the Sled Dog Sanctuary was asked to set up camp at the Fairbanks office and speak to thousands of tourists who were arriving daily about our sled dogs.

Many were curious about our sport, our gear and all wanted the chance to pet our dogs!

Through the long days of summer we welcomed the opportunity of bringing in many fosters who welcomed the attention of strangers, as well as those who needed more practice feeling comfortable in large crowds. It was a rewarding and enriching show for everyone involved.

Throughout the summer we made countless connections and raised awareness of shelter dogs everywhere. The Yukon Quest show was such a success that we were able to make eleven total adoptions with a few finding their forever home in the lower 48 states!

Sled Dogs in Schools

The Sled Dog Sanctuary also makes appearances in schools helping to
bring excitement to children everywhere about the history of our Alaskan lifestyle.

Our four week programs help children learn through the dogs eyes about the basics of nutrition, exercise and teamwork. Our dogs are happy to support learning and thrive on being able to interact with children of all ages.

In the fourth week of our Sled Dogs in Schools program dog sled rides are offered (weather permitting) which makes for a perfect hands on learning experience that remains in the children's minds throughout their lives.
